Somatic Incompliance: The Look and Resistance of Mario Bava's Evil Eye

by Kier-La Janisse

While many consider The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963) – retitled and re-edited for the United States as Evil Eye – a ‘lesser’ Mario Bava film, and a necessary stepping stone to the lurid grandeur of pioneering giallo staple Blood and Black Lace the following year, it is this very status as a ‘transitional’ work that makes it so interesting. The ways that The Girl Who Knew Too Much/Evil Eye interacts with various forms of texts – from the ‘paranoid woman’s films’ of the 1940s to the pulp paperbacks that gave the giallo genre its name – illustrate the struggle for a feminine voice that had been building since the war and would become a hallmark of that decade. The giallo film genre is not known for its ‘feminist’ qualities, and this is another thing that makes Evil Eye unique: it is more aligned with the gender politics of Black Sunday than with the litany of giallo films that followed in its wake, making it one of Bava’s most feminist horror films – despite tacked-on endings in both versions that neutralise that voice.

Withnail & I - Preparing the Book

by Anthony Nield

Since its belated theatrical release in early 1988, Withnail & I has slowly but surely attracted an ever-increasing amount of ink. In fact, if you ever feel the need to trace the steadily-growing popularity and appeal of the film, then a quick scan of the key texts does a fine job. Initially there were the reviews, and a mixed bag at that; the Village Voice describing it as “civilised Cheech and Chong”. And then, nothing. Or rather, the words being spoken about the film were word-of-mouth and not to be found in print. It was only when a new magazine and a new audience – loaded and the ‘new lad’ of the mid-nineties – emerged that some recognition in a popular publication arrived. Appearing in May 1994, in the very first issue, James Brown’s article, ‘The Biggest Cult Video in Britain?’, became the first to identify the growing student audience for the film, as well as laying out the rules for the now-infamous drinking game.

Restoring Withnail

Like most fans of the film I know, I didn't see Withnail & I when it first opened. In 1987, at the age of 16, I spent an unhealthy amount of time in our local cinema seeing all manner of whatever was popular... Good Morning VietnamRoboCopWall Street, Beverly Hills Cop 2Lethal Weapon, The Untouchables, etc. On the plus side, I saw Full Metal Jacket the weekend it was released. Sadly, the same is also true of Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise. So one can deduce that at this point in my life I hadn't really adopted much in the way of critical faculties, and that my film tastes, such as they were, sat very comfortably in the mainstream. Okay, I saw Radio Days that year, but that's not exactly Sous le soleil de Satan...

Meet the Team - Ewan Cant

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB AT ARROW?

I joined as a Marketing and Operations Executive for Arrow Video a little over a year ago. That title covers a whole range of things, but the ‘bread and butter’ of my role, if you like, is being a full-time disc producer – as a huge horror fan, basically anything in that general area comes my way, which I’m more than happy with! At the end of last year I started getting more involved in the events side of things, bringing Arrow Video to various conventions around the UK and hosting some of our very own theme screenings (mulled wine and Silent Night, Deadly Night, anyone?). I’m also currently engaged in getting a whole new range of Arrow Video merchandise off the ground, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Meet the Team - Michael Brooke

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB AT ARROW?

I’m a freelance writer/editor/producer who has worked for several Blu-ray/DVD labels (BFI, Eureka, Second Run) over the years in various capacities, but Arrow in general and Arrow Academy in particular take up most current waking hours.  Since 2011, I’ve contributed to numerous Arrow releases as producer, co-producer, extra creator, booklet essayist/editor, QC inspector, blurb writer, trailer cutter, you name it.

Monday, 7 July 2014

Meet the Team - Anthony Nield

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB AT ARROW?

I work as a producer on a freelance basis for Arrow which means I’m allocated a freshly-licenced title for either the Arrow Video or Arrow Academy range, given a budget and told to create as definitive an edition as is possible. I then go away, research the film (or films) in plenty of depth and set about commissioning the new artwork, the booklet and the extras. I’ll also look into what’s already out there and consider the possibilities of licencing pre-existing video and print materials – whether it be an interview, a commentary, a short film, a documentary or what-have-you.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB AT ARROW?

I assist with the marketing side of things at Arrow across the entirety of Arrow Films from our theatrical films to our Nordic Noir brand so have to make sure I am up always up to date with our growing catalogue of releases. In relation to Arrow Video, the main focus of my job is managing all of our Social Media channels and helping with the organisation and management of all the conventions and events that we are attend throughout the year.

Fifth Anniversary SteelBook Competition - The Winners (and the Answers)

Meet the Team - Marc Foley-Comer

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB AT ARROW?

I oversee all the PR activity across the company, for both Arrow Films and Arrow Video. Around four-to-six weeks prior to each Arrow Video release, I’ll press release the specific title out wide to our database, and from thereon in I focus on mass review coverage in both off- and online publications. Coverage can vary as far-and-wide as The Guardian Guide to a YouTube vlogger doing an unboxing of the Blu-ray

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT IS YOUR JOB AT ARROW?

Read It and Weep: Nekromantik officially classified!

Shocked. Astounded. Flabbergasted. These are all words that could be used to describe your reaction when we announced last week that we would be bringing Jörg Buttgereit's grimy 1987 underground classic Nekromantik to UK home video for the very first time later this year - fully uncut. Many were asking, "How on Earth did you get it past the BBFC?!" Others simply declared: "You'll never get this past the BBFC uncut!"

Well, ye of little faith, this morning we officially accepted the '18' category for Nekromantik and the title is now searchable on the BBFC website: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/releases/nekromantik-1987Go ahead, take a look - as they say, seeing is believing!

Here follows some words of caution offered up by the BBFC regarding the film's contents:
